What if there could be hope?
It is happening again! A Place of Greater Safety will run for a second time, in Denmark, near Copenhagen over 10th–13th September 2026. The run will be in English and is open to participants from anywhere.
In an oppressive near-future society, a few people have managed to escape – to build a ragtag community together. They bring with them fear, mistrust, and the effects of trauma from their mistreatment – but can they overcome their difficulties and differences, to work towards a better future?
A Place of Greater Safety is a hopepunk larp. You can read here ( ) what we mean by that – in brief, it’s that the larp steers towards a radically hopeful ending. The characters may be broken and suspicious at the start, but can eventually feel positive about the journey that they are on. There are plenty of other larps that are about misery – A Place of Greater Safety is not that. It explicitly frames hope as a positive force that a community can build together, despite their problems and the barriers that face their actions. The aim is not fairytale endings, but that participants can build to their characters being better off at the end of the larp than the beginning, while acknowledging the messiness of starting to heal.
A Place of Greater Safety is a queer larp. The characters are victims of oppression, of one kind or another, because of their inability or unwillingness to conform with social norms – around gender performance, around sexuality, around romantic relationships, and so on. Because of tight control of information and education, they don’t have the language to express their identities. But perhaps, in the community that they’re creating together, they can explore and value their authentic selves.
We are particularly concerned in the design to include and represent asexuality and aromanticism, among other varieties of queerness. We feel that these are identities, and lived experiences, that have been under-represented in ‘queer larp’. We want to be sure that ace/aro larpers are able to see themselves in A Place of Greater Safety, and to see their stories given a full share of the light. We’re also interested in the intersection of queerness and neurodivergence, which was an emergent theme in the first run of the larp.
A Place of Greater Safety is intended to be mainly for larpers who are 18+, but we are working with the local community and the larp may include some younger people, some of whom may be 16 or 17. (We will ensure that people younger than 18 aren’t cast in romantic relationships with anyone older than 18, regardless of character age.) We’re interested in telling the stories of older characters who have lived with societal expectations for years, and working through what they’ve internalized and how to build something better: and also of younger characters who have grown up as powerless victims of the system but are now coming into taking responsibility for shaping their own lives. (Of course, you don’t have to play a character that’s the same age as yourself.)
Larps On Location are the designers and organizers of A Place of Greater Safety, and this run in Denmark is being produced by Maya B. Hindsberg, Flemming Jacobsen, and Charles Bo Nielsen. We are working in collaboration with Larpmakers. The venue is Hareskovshytten, on the outskirts of Copenhagen.
Signup for A Place of Greater Safety will open on 1st October 2025, and close on 15th October. There are 30 places available. The standard price is 180 Euros, and some subsidized places are available at 80 Euros.
